Ablaze

Ablaze is the tragic story of New Zealand’s worst fire disaster representing a hugely dramatic chapter in New Zealand’s history: it forever changed the way we manage fire prevention, our fire service and how we as a nation deal with public safety.

It is also a woman’s story, portraying a strong sense of what it meant to be a woman in 1947, especially that of a professional working woman, something relatively new to that period after the end of the second world war. Themes of female social status, sexism, equality and a women’s life decisions and choices in this period are all explored throughout the film.
