About the Series

I Am… takes the original format of I am Innocent and uses it to tell the real-life events of people whose experiences are unique and diverse. These are their accounts, in their own words, taking viewers on a powerfully affecting journey via emotionally impactful true life stories, providing insight into worlds many of us will never be privy to.

In this collection of intensely personal first-hand accounts from New Zealanders who have lived in, or currently inhabit the margins of our society. People who can open our eyes, teach us something new, and remind us that despite our differing life experiences we are all human.

I Am… has the capability to cover a hugely diverse range of human experience – allowing individuals to share their deeply emotional stories without judgement, so we can inhabit their worlds through them. This series is a genuine exploration of our society, and all the very different people that make it so rich and divergent.

“…this is the strength of I Am: it turns what is theoretical in the brains of so many of us into something real and immediate. We know that people live with HIV, but to hear it from the point of view of someone who is living with it, and has also lived through the prejudice and stigma that comes from living with HIV, makes it startlingly real. It’s not revolutionary to say that documentary brings real stories to the screen – that’s the point of the entire medium – but the stories I Am has chosen are important ones to highlight, not least because they’re chronically under-explored.”
